PROTEIN AND SENIORS

Protein is essential for people of all ages but more importantly in seniors due to age-related health factors. As we age, our bodies will go through changes and our protein needs and its utilization become more pronounced. Here are some reasons why protein is essential particularly for seniors:

  1. Muscle Mass and Strength: Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength which our bodies go through as we age. Regular exercise, protein intake can help slow down this process. Muscle mass must be preserved for as long as possible in order to maintain our mobility and overall quality of life.

  2. Bone Health: Seniors lose bone density. To strengthen our bones and maintain our bone density, sufficient protein intake is a must. Calcium, Vitamin D, protein, and weight bearing exercises support bone health and help reduce the risk of fractures.

  3. Immune Function: Protein plays a very important role in supporting the immune system by producing antibodies and help maintain immune cell function. As we age, our immune system may weaken, making them more susceptible to infections and illnesses.

  4. Wound Healing: Seniors can face challenges with wound healing because of slower cell regeneration. Adequate protein intake is important for tissue repair and healing wounds.

  5. Nutrient Absorption: The body’s ability to absorb nutrients can decline in old age.

  6. Adequate protein intake helps compensate for potential malabsorption issues and support overall nutritional status.

  7. Appetite Regulation: Some seniors may experience a reduced appetite, leading to inadequate nutrient intake. Protein-rich foods can be more satiating, helping them meet their nutritional needs despite decreased appetite.

  8. Chronic Illness Management: Many seniors deal with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease. Protein can aid in managing such conditions by stabilizing blood sugar levels and supporting heart health.

There is no standard formula for protein intake for senior adults. Overall health, physical activity level, medical conditions, genetics, and other factors must be considered in establishing what is an adequate amount of protein intake for each individual. Before doing any major changes in your diet make sure that you consult with your doctor or a registered dietician to determine your own specific protein requirements to ensure a well-balanced diet meets your own particular needs.
